My Arcam FMJ decided to act up and is now relegated to the little system, so am now in market for its replacement. Gonna save up for a while, but need something in the "clearance" department ....under $300 maybe. Hoping there's a jem out there in tha market that outperforms its ticket price. Any suggestions ? Thanx folks!

I've always been happy with older used Rega CD players.

You might be able to find a Faroudja DV1000 DVD player for $300. I have two of them and the audio is very good. It has separate lasers for audio and video.

Replaced my Rega Saturn with a Marantz CD-6004 about 4 years ago. No regrets at the time, and still don't have any. The Marantz will also read anything, unlike the Saturn. YMMV

I can seriously vouch for a Denon DCD 2800 al i had up until recently. Rare but they come up.
Paid 325$ and it was a beauty.
Never had a problem once.
It weighed in at about 35 pounds of solid build.
Check out some Denon.

Since the 80s,have owned Meridian,Mission(2),Naim(2),Nad(2),Rega,EAD.......the Marantz CD-6005 at $550 list offers a lot of performance at this price point.......might be the 'gem' you're looking for ,if you can find it used near your budget point......maybe someone with 6005 & 6004 (^^^) experience can jump in here.

A couple good choices I think. A couple...Rega and 6004... Currently on the boards too.
The Rega was my first thought as well. Thanx y'all!

Can't go wrong with one of the later Sony ES series, and they can be found at really good prices these days. Eg.

Denon DCD 1500. Should be around $125.00/200.00 depending on condition and series. Excellent CD player. Mass produced so price is right. Will compete against the old Revox CD players of the era pretty good!

I've had three Shanling players at different price points and I defy anything contemporaneous with them to beat them for sound-for-money and build quality.

Grab a cheap (<$100) CDP off of Kijiji that has digital outputs, and run it into a standalone DAC (i.e. Teac, Schitt, Cambridge Audio, etc.).

The DACs in the older CD players can no longer compete with modern DACs.

Granted, there are still a few exceptions out there (i.e. Sony ES series, Esoteric, Bryston, Rega, etc.), but you won't find those for under $300.

Happy shopping!

One player I think gets overlooked is the EAD Theater Vision P
Most think it as only a dvd buts it is one incredible cd player
sold here for around 5 k I see them on here from time to time for 3 to 500
I had a audio aero player at the time and it really gave it a run for its money
absolutely smoked the ead ultra disc I had before and they seem to fetch 7 to 800 on here used

+1 on the EAD Theatre Vision p player. I have one as well and it sounds very good. A little more detailed sound than my Faroudja dv1000 but a little thinner sounding. Both are very good players, the audio board in the Faroudja was designed by EAD. The EAD player can still be modified or repaired by Noble Electronics.
