Hi,

I am considering a new receiver (small family room set up with a pair of Boston Acoustic A26's)....I have found 2 in my budget.

I am not concerned about features .....won't use a lot of the technology in either.

Just sound quality and performance.....reliability, etc.

No cd or TT here - just FM and iPod, etc

Yamaha R-N301 Network Stereo Receiver

....or

Onkyo TX-8140 Network Stereo Receiver

Your thoughts appreciated!

Thanks

Anything but Onkyo.

Go with the Yammy.

Clearly a Yammy fan and not Onkyo!

Thx

I do have a Yammy in the basement and it has performed very well.
But I heard this unit (Onkyo) and it sounded pretty good but know very little about the brand.

Onkyo has one of the highest rate of failure in the industry.

I did not know that!

Yeah, I would steer clear of the Onkyo. Just do a search of the forums and read a few of the horror stories.

Stay away from Onkyo. They are actually worse than Monster. Absolute bottom-of-the-bin electronics, poorly designed with minimum-value compnents. Yamaha on the other hand are good, solid technology with good (if not great) components. I have a DSP-2070 Yammy that I have had since new...still sweet performing after almost 20 years.

Good luck with your purchase! :)

Hmm...I would disagree with that fact. (but I do agree that the newer equipment has some issues)

I have a nice Onkyo M504/P304 that has been running for decades...not a hiccup. :)
I wouldn't compare them with monster cable, that's for sure. But needless to say, their newer stuff doesn't hold a candle to the Onkyo of the past.

As much as I love older luxman/denon/onkyo equipment, yamaha would be the way to go for anything being made from 2015 onwards.

I'd also probably favor the Yamaha. However, from what I've read, most of the Onkyo problems relate to HDMI board failures in their AVRs. This would be a non-issue on the 2-channel receivers.

A friend picked up a TX-8050 stereo receiver for a good price....and has run it for the last couple of years problem free. I didn't think it sounded too bad for what it was. Another colleague bought a entry-model Onkyo 2-channel (can't recall the model) about 4-5 years ago, and has run it 8+ hours daily in a small retail store without fault. I bought a TX-844 receiver in 1991, and it's still in daily use with its current owner.

Having said that, I'd personally forego either the Onkyo or Yamaha for something like a NAD C316bee.....which should be in a similar price range (though it would lack a tuner).

Onkyo issues are largely HDMI. Terrible

This is about 2 channel receivers, that being said I had an Onkyo tx8130 about 2 years ago and returned after an hour of listening.

I have a Yamaha rn602 currently

I have an Onkyo TX-8160 and totally love it. Had not listened to Yamaha in a big while (since the R-5) but they seem to have great stereo receiver offerings as well.
Would've loved to try the R-N602 but it wasn't out yet when I was ready to buy, and the ergonomics/looks of modern Yamaha receivers turned me off.

I'm probably in the minority here but I went from a NAD C356BEE to the TX-8160, and the NAD actually sounded worse to my ears... I don't doubt a C316 or C326 should sound better though.

I also have a TX-8020 for my computer audio which is really solid for $200, no issues with it for 3 years now. It replaced an horrible TEAC AG-790 receiver.

In that price range at 300.00$ or less, the Yamaha R-N301 has to be one of the best available receiver at this time.
My son has the R-N402, no problems, and very satisfied with this product.

I am running a similar Onkyo setup with M504 power amp, P304 pre-amp and T-9090II tuner. Sounds great with very good build quality.
