Forum: Sources - Analog   Topic: Ortofon OM40 or Denon DL-103R ?

Compliance aside... Doesn't the OM40 have a much finer stylus tip than the 103R? I'm not too up on the 103 and all its iterations. The 103 is conical and I'm not sure if the R has a similar? The OM40 has a FG stylus tip. Seems like it'd be better at getting down there in the groove, but the Denon is...

I used to think that it was a daunting task. Always checking and rechecking. Thinking I'd never gotten it right. One thing I'd like to say is I see a lot of people using printed protractors for alignment but they don't know what overhang is. So, it seems like a game of randomly planking the printed ...

I see ads from time to time listed and I'm thinking what are these people thinking when posting this? They often include things like the American retail price, plus conversion then tax for an extremely inflated retail and say, this is my price, which is sometimes more than street price new? One exam...

They can be had for quite a bit less most of the time. But, all depends. If you were ready to pull the trigger on a new one for $600+tax... 450 taxes in could be a great deal, specially if it is as new. I've seen them for less than $300 though. Probably with more hours, but still looking great. Plus...

I think you may be right, the message is beyond the medium. But, if vinyl didn't sound good, CD would probably have a better following. When you get to a certain point, the medium gets out of the way of the sound. That is the way I would like to think of it. When I was using a Debut Carbon, and a 2M...

Provided the TT part covers the basics: some isolation (ideally a suspended chassis), platter doesn't ring, very low wow and flutter, stable speed control, decent mat design etc. then I would agree with you, the cartridge and then next I would say the arm has the most effect on the resulting sound ...

Yeah, I'm not saying anything negative about the fact that Levinson is producing a turntable. But, take something like Rega, Linn, Oracle and so many others who have been in the turntable game for a while. Rigid, suspended, whatever you prefer, but, they've been around a while. I feel they're truste...

Hey guys, Was flipping through the most recent Stereophile, Feb 2018, and notice a review of the Mobile Fidelity turntable. But, also saw an ad for a Mark Levinson turntable which appears to be new, and a collab with VPI (evident from the design even). And it made me really think and wonder. There a...

Judges should all be invited to Michael Fremer's house to listen to the nominees tracks on his setup? :P I would like to think they are at least listening on some sort of decent hifi. Do you think they are listening to the tracks together in some sort of room and listening unbiased? I'm sure the son...

In my opinion, I look at a lot of vinyl gear. I see added value on, say, Rega tables with Groovetracer upgrades... Delrin platter, GT Subplatter, Counterweight, as they are easily reversible and often sell with original parts included. LED lights replaced in vintage receivers are also a plus. Not su...

This is a huge area of interest for me. Too bad I live in a remote area! Newfoundland currently has 2 OTA HD channels. CBC and the local NTV. They do, in fact, have a lot of programming that I watch and enjoy! So, this is good. I've got Bell cable/internet/landline as I still like the use of my land...

Couldn't agree more. CAM is slightly different as the lines of communication are generally open before money is exchanged and product is shipped. eBay tends to be bid, pay, and communicate if there's an issue. As 20 year Ebay veteran with close to 9,000 feedback (of course, many people don't leave f...

Hook me up with a decent 504 cart sled! Mine is a little wonky and sometimes loses a channel (tried cleaning the contact area and it wasn't helping much! Let's face it. We all hoard something. I hoard Dual headshell cartridge 'sleds' and replacement universal bayonet-mount headshells. They don't tak...

While I do agree to an extent. Having over 500+ feedback on eBay, I know that a TON of eBayers don't leave feedback for me as a seller. And I used to leave feedback after every payment was received. But, wasn't always getting them back. I'm an honest seller, and have 100% positive. But, a few bad ap...

Lots of stuff going on here. Are you just looking for a Turntable? RP1 and Debut Carbon crop up on the used market for ~$300 frequently. But, in my opinion and having owned the Red, if you change the table, and leave the phono and cart the same, I think the upgrade will only be marginal. Both tables...
