Don't be afraid to use the tone controls on that Marantz.
The treble control will tell you if you have a wonky high end.

Your head seems a little close to the back wall.
Treatment behind speakers could be moved to the back wall doing more good.
Might clear up some smear.

Anyway,any "real" preamp should drive the inputs of any pro amp with no difficulty.No need for any gadgets in between
for domestic use.
Those Bryston preamps with balanced outputs put out up to 30 Volts into high impedance loads. 15 Volts unbalanced.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. It's cool to know I can get the Belden 10 or 12 from TFA... I've used that stuff from BJC in shorter runs, and it was OK for my needs. I kind of like that it's UL approved for in-wall use, in case I ever want to go that way. I'll look into the Canare star qu...
