Woofers in the A50 are 16 Ohms and wired in parallel to provide 8 Ohm nominal impedance
........so they are not the same as used in the 25, 35 etc.

Those symptoms sound very familiar on that NAD series. Frequently it will be traced to defective (intermittent) speaker protection relays and a few cold solder joints. The relays are the tic-Tac sized black boxes. These are not expensive (<$13) and are worth correcting for many more years of trouble...
