Forum: General Audio Discussion   Topic: When is Vintage not really Vintage ?

I see late 80's (meaning borderline 90's) electronics posted as "vintage" gear. Is this not stretching it just to command higher prices? To me, "Vintage" starts at the '70's and older. Comments ? Unfortunately, in audio, Vintage more often then not is trying to denote higher qua...

Ok, so thanks for the Tip earlier in the thread about Visions having the NAD M51 on sale. I bought one and have been running it since then. I have/had so many DACs in my system and this one sounds really good. I agree on the 'less brittle' comment. In my system the NAD can sound a tiny bit in your ...

Has anyone tried out or bought the Totem Tribe towers? I am considering them as an upgrade to my Sonus Faber Venere 2.0. I would be matching them with a Naim Supernait 2 integrated amp. I've heard the Tribe tower sound great (Simaudio 340i) and sound not so great hooked to various other amps. This ...

A partial TAF Exhibitor list has been posted.

http://torontoaudiofest.org/visitors/exhibitor-list/

It is not complete, but looks like a lot of the people from the Montreal Audio Fest.

This is good and I will be at both shows.

1989 Yamaha Receiver, Dual Turntable and Mission 761i bookshelf speakers. Bought a Yamaha CD player later. Laser died eventually. The mission speakers I kept for the office system and eventually i gave them to a friend. The Missions still work, surrounds good and are just about 30 years old. The rec...

I may be a little late. :P I've had good luck with Kimber Kable 8PR. I've heard that Kimber Kable lack low end, but the 8PR is not only (relatively) inexpensive, but it doesn't seem to have any problems in low end reproduction. I compared it to much more expensive Wireworld Silver Clad OCC cables, a...

The article does mention the usual MSRP calculation of 5xCost of manufacture, but I am wondering if this also includes the retailers portion of the purchase price. From what I have heard, most gear is bought/commisioned by retailers at 50% below MSRP, so which number are we using for final cost calc...

I don't know why 'pro' audio gear is seen as better then other products, especially considering the mostly low cost of the pro gear. I've used plenty of inexpensive pro gear, included an M-Audio interface and a TC Electronics interface. They are all built to a very low cost, with really cheap parts...

Well, I for one heartily endorse "moving on" from Mission speakers, as I always found them the most reliably boring sounding brand on the market. On to greener pastures.... :D Any suggestions? Some great stuff early on from James_W above the $1000 mark, but the reason I've been ...

Looking to turn a PC into a music server, streamer etc in an economically. What I like about this one is it's versatility it's a dac and USB to spdif converter. If I don't like the DAC section it becomes a converter. Can users comment on it's sound qualities and their experiences http://www.m-audio...

MY first speakers where little mission book shelves. Which where 27 years old when i sold them a few years back. These sounded great, but were not even remotely transparent. The sound of the speaker was the sound of the system. :D Depending on what you are looking for in a system, I think there is '...

I'm on my 3rd pair of Missions in a year - went from the 737 Renaissance (actually still have a pair, but could use a bit of work) to the M71 bookshelf and now have a pair of the M73i floorstanders. I do prefer floorstanding speakers, and biwired ones at that. Paired amp is a 100wpc Rotel RX-1050, ...

Were the Neat Iota Xplorers there? Curious to know how these ugly little buggers sound... They are very nice sounding. Very musical, warm, relatively accurate. Neat tries to make a big deal about this tiny speaker filling a room with sound from low down on the ground, and it does indeed do this, bu...

This was my first serious power bar, and it was relatively inexpensive compared to some of the higherend offerings. I love the spring loaded high grip outlets. I can't speak on the surge protection, since i have never needed it, but there is a little improvement in the sound of audio gear. The built...
