Seems you are basically using a 1/2 wave rectified which, assuming net 5ohm (i.e. assuming LEDs have no losses) and 6.4 VAC gives an average (RMS) vooltage if 2V, so average current will be: I = V/R = 2V/5ohm = .4A or 400 ma Maybe that is too high for the LEDs? ... the smoothing cap may be cause for...
