Good looking and good sounding speakers. I like them enough I purchased a newer version.
Not perfect - but decent cosmetics, and very good value for the sound quality.
Recently replaced both tweeters with correct model Polydax (Audax?). When I got these, one of the original Polydax had been switched.
Fully functional - and v decent sound in the $500-1000 range of used speakers.
Later version of the 2C - with rubber surrounds on woofers - a bonus, especially as 4 drivers to do if were foam.
I pulled the socks up and checked every driver - noted the make, model, and ohm readout. All check out good.
...at one point I noticed a slight "whizzing" or "fizzing" noise on one side which I think is the tone pot on the midrange. Will try to clean at some point. Quite minor. In fact the last time I played them I didn't even notice it.
...Evidence that someone unknown to me has been "under the hood", and rewired drivers from the crossover, possibly added some goop to foam centers on the passives, and ??
That's it for known issues.
Condition - cosmetics are certainly decent...say solid 7 out of 10, as compared to several other unrestored sets. Piano black tops and bottoms are good, grill socks are good. Slight wrinkling of fabric on top of one - which I may be able to improve now that I have access to underside thereof. Am following proper repair procedure and coming in from the bottom of the speaker, and rolling up the grill sock..
Has correct Vifa front bass drivers, and mids seem correct "in the can" type Vandersteen specials, rear woofers look correct too.
Crossover photos....the last one is one off Ebay, which I assume is stock...first 2 are from these speakers. Look the same, but one has couple different color caps - factory switch?
Most photos are with a flash, which makes things look a bit nastier. But yes they are a bit nasty underneath. However, possibly this is how they come from factory?...Not meant to be showing the inside. At least now you know - most people aren't going to show you their naked Vandys, as its a pain to get the grill cloth out of the way.
Speaker terminals I think been upgraded to newer multi way banana plugs that take fair fat wire.
Includes stands which are sand filled (metal pedestals hold it). Stands were optional.
Sound? The Vandersteen 2C is a bit of an icon, being in production over 20 years I think...with ongoing upgrades. It is considered a true high end speaker, and a great value in that category. Current model costs aprox $2500-3000 Canadian, and it looks very much like this one - only guts have been updated.
Impressive sound - fills a medium to large room very well, lots of presence, very substantial and pleasant bass which digs quite low with v nice tone and accuracy. I like the "tonal balance" a lot - overall sound is just good. Very good imaging. Not that fussy as to amplifier, although will respond to higher quality power, as many speakers do. Mids are very impressive, but possibly the highs a bit rolled off for my tastes - cant say for sure, as overall these are continuing to grow on me.. Contenders in the $500-1000 range of used speakers as is. A lot of people like these - and consider them high fidelity class. And of course, some don't like them. I like them enough that I'm bought a newer version 2Ce Signature.
Shipping? Wont be cheap but its your dime..I'll be asking something for packing materials and my time if I have to ship. No refunds or returns if shipped.
If you want - I have more photos showing the insides and drivers. Also a report of what each driver ohm measurements and model numbers. All drivers have continuity and tested to make music from a source signal.
In central Alberta. Can deliver for free to Calgary or Red Deer, on my schedule. Edmonton maybe for gas money, but could be awhile.
