ATTENTION all CAM member tube shoppers...
Finding the right tube for your amp/pre amp,you will find that there will be a lot of different opinions ....
Many times all the answers are right.
The complications can be is some tubes can be very system dependent so it will depend on your system as to which tubes sound the best.
We all desire quiet nice sounding tubes.
Why are some tubes noisier then others,or quieter in certain amps and not in others?
Audio tubes need to settle in and then will get better once burned in.
Definitely buy from a reputable dealers!
If you're going to be into tubes, its always beneficial to develop a relationship with dealers you can trust.
If you want to find the best sounding tube for your system and don't mind spending $$, then buy several brands/types and listen for yourself.
Each brand tends to feature characteristics that may appeal to you and match well with your unit, others not so much so there really isn't one 'best-sounding' tube out there as its very dependent on the application.
Also, while these super rare and uber-expensive tubes do sound great, they're best implementation is in sensitive pre amps and phono stages Remember, a good portion of their cost can be attributed to their scarcity, not just their sonics.
They really don't stand out in the usual amplifier's driver stage and in most other gear, a similar but substantially more common NOS tube of the same manufacturer will provide all but maybe the last 1% of the sonics of the super tubes at a much lower price.
Although improving, still many of the new tubes made today in Europe, China and Russia only reproduce random varied harmonics.
This can be why most of us upgrades to a vintage made tube made decades ago when these rare inner earth metals were available in the inside construction of the vintage tube.
These metals have become too expensive to use and today’s tube makers have found cheaper substitutes which seem to work but do not reproduce all the nuances and textures in music! ...
These 5963 tubes are usually very well matched (triode to triode) and noise-free.
Try them, you may like the results.
The highly recommended 5963 + 12AU7 BALDWIN ORGAN GRADE tubes are both outstanding audiophile tube!
Try them in your amp/pre amps/headphone amps!!!
You will be impressed enough to buy another as a spare, and most likely not expect to continue searching for anything better.
They exemplifies "truth in timbre" and is very clean, sweet (but not artificially so), and neutral.
Inner voices and hall acoustics are easy to hear!
Just wait until you listen to all the types of 5963's.
It's another 12AU7A variant.
The 5963 IS A MEDIUM-MU TWIN TRIODE. 9—PIN MINIATURE TYPE
A variant of the 12AU7 family of tubes
Very little is written about these 5963 tubes.
It's practically today unknown, yet these are excellent fantastic replacements for 12AU7 tubes!
Smooth and sweet, yet bargain priced compared with many European brands!
Very smooth tube from top to bottom with no weakness!
These are a nice industrial/military upgrade variant type which is nearly identical to the standard 12AU7.
RCA made a nice black plate version of this tube
The 1950’s RCA 5963 sounds more dynamic than the standard 12AU7 Blackplate
It’s also a very good low-noise tube.
The plate voltage rating is a little lower than for a 12AU7, but for most applications, it will work fine.
It has a rugged cathode and should be quite long lived, similar to the 5814.
That specially-designed cathode is said to withstand long periods of time in cut-off without damaging the tube (cathode poisoning).
This made them a great choice for NORAD computers, which led to a good supply of them on the USA West Coast.
Use them and you will marvel at the quality and value.
They are dead-silent and seem to have an unusually long lifespan.
Very satisfied with the sound they produce.
I prefer it to Mullard 12AU7, Sylvania 5814A,and of course the stock modern 12AU7's.
A truly fine 12AU7 variant from the 1950's, many tube audiophiles feel these can outperform most other NOS 12AU7 tubes!
In computer (and some other) service, tubes were quite often operated as switches, biased to cutoff (no plate current) for long periods of time and then turned on, while always the heater and cathode were warmed up and ready to go.
In ordinary tubes, this leads to a condition known as "cathode interface resistance" or "sleeping sickness."
The cathode interface is a layer of metal, usually nickel, between the cathode sleeve and the oxide coating that emits electrons. In ordinary tubes, under conditions of long-duration tube cutoff, it generates a growing resistance until at last the cathode "goes to sleep."
Computer tube cathodes were specially treated to survive those long periods of cutoff without developing cathode interface resistance

The 5963 tube is a nice industrial type which is nearly identical to the standard 12AU7.
G.E. ,RCA and HP - Amperex made very nice versions of this tube!
The plate voltage rating is just a little lower than for a 12AU7, but for most applications, it will work fine.
It has a rugged cathode and should be long lived, similar to the 5814.
Watch this tube, as it is plentiful now and prices are low.
As audiophiles discover it, the rush will be on!

It’s also a very good low-noise tube.
GE has it in their broadcast line.

These metals have become too expensive to use and today’s tube makers have found cheaper substitutes which seem to work but do not reproduce all the nuances and textures in music! ...

Also have these 5AR4 / GZ34 FAT BOYS!
(2) are still available
All test in the NOS range
They have big grey plates
Originally branded PHILIPS, RCA. SYLVANIA
These FAT BOY rectifiers gives the amp a very zippy response with lots of push!
These tubes will make a magnificent superior immense distinction in the performance of your amp!
This version of the 5AR4 has a very large glass envelope like a 6L6GC, hence where it got the "Fat Boy" name!
These are very vigorous tubes, have a remarkable ambience and do truly harmonize!

These 5963 tubes are usually very well matched (triode to triode) and noise-free.
Try them, you may like the results.
The highly recommended 5963 variant of 12AU7 tubes is an outstanding audiophile tube!
Try them in your amp/pre amps/headphone amps!!!
You will be impressed enough to buy another as a spare, and most likely not expect to continue searching for anything better.
Now is my favorite tube in my 12AU7-based collection of variant tubes!
It exemplifies "truth in timbre" and is very clean, sweet (but not artificially so), and neutral.
Inner voices and hall acoustics are easy to hear!
Just wait until you listen to all the types of 5963's.

It's probably one of the most misunderstood things about vacuum tubes:
The name on the tube is the company that made it right?
Well actually the answer is No - and that's why it can be so confusing.

The tube making giants of the 1940's, 50's and 60's were Amperex / Mullard / Philips / RCA / Sylvania and GE ( General Electric ) to name most but certainly not all.
While it's true that they made tubes with their company name on the glass - the bulk of their production was devoted to making tubes under contract for other companies.

Remember the Zenith TV your family had in the living room back in the 70's?
All the tubes inside were labelled Zenith and Only Replace with Genuine Zenith Tubes.
Brilliant marketing but somewhat deceiving since Zenith didn't make tubes.
They bought them in bulk from GE and Sylvania and the supply contracts required that the tubes were labelled Zenith.
The public didn't know that - it made sense to replace a Zenith tube with a Zenith tube.
Zenith knew that other brands could be used instead but they were protecting their repeat business.

This is just one example - multiply it by the 100's of other companies making TV's, organs, radio receivers, amplifiers, medical / test equipment and you can see how confusing this became.
All those different names on the glass but still only a handful of companies making tubes.

So how do you know who made a tube?
Learn to read the production codes - not the brand names.
Each tube will have markings which show two things - the company that made it and when it was made.
Once you learn these codes it makes tube identification easy and allows you to find good deals.
There are a lot of good resources on the web that will teach you about production / date codes

Also have several 12AX7 tubes made by Philips Amperex: some labelled for Rogers or Electrohome and the 1st one as an Amperex Bugle Boy. Guess what? They all sound the same. Why?
Because they were made on the same assembly line, using the same materials and method of construction and with the same testing afterwards.
If Amperex made the tube it's going to sound like an Amperex tube.

Just like Johnnie Walker scotch tastes like Johnnie Walker scotch regardless if it was packaged in the familiar bottles or a glass mason jar.

The only difference is the tube on the far left will sell for double the price - because it has the Bugle Boy logo.
We've been brought up to think that the label on the outside is the most important factor and that simply isn't the case.
The label means nothing - who made the tube is what your ears hear.

The Mullard / Amperex / Philips 12AX7 that have someone elses name on the glass but still give you all the tone you expect from these companies.

Thanks for your time - hope you've found this helpful!

Who else is of the opinion that the 12BH7 will sound better than the 12AU7?

Using 12AU7 in the input wasn't as clean sounding as are the 12BH7 or 6FQ7/6CG7.
Depending on the pre amp using 12BH7 in the input was nice but the 6FQ7/6CG7 was even better.
All most every circuit where I subbed a 12BH7 in for a 12AU7 the sound has improved.
Some excellent sounding 12BH7A tubes are:
Sylvania with green yellow print
RCA black plate or even better are the charcoal plate (non shiny black plate)
Raytheon 1958 BP

You may want to watch the heater current though on some units,
given the design was intended for 12AU7 but other then that they run the same circuits.
Typical 12AU7's are in the 100-200V range (except for the 5963: 60-70V)

With so many 12AU7 variants out there (only the 12AX7 has more variants)
Here are some very good references on the types of 12AU7 tubes available:
They include:
12AU7
12AU7A
5814 (If you can find the CBS Hytron 5818, do try them!!!)
5963
6189
ECC82
ECC802
There are others, too - and that's not even counting the variance among brands.
Even then, there are "triple-mica's," different style getters, 5 Stars, JAN's, and many other brands.
I must have about 2 dozen different 12AU7-type tubes, and only 2-3 are actually 12AU7's
These tubes all have different flavors and the bottom line is to use whatever sounds good to you no matter what the opinions of others

Available 12BH7 Black Long Plate Tubes:
-G.E.
-Sylvania
-RCA

Also we have these 12AT7 RCA Black Plate tubes @ $25.00 each
The 12AT7 has a mu factor of 60.
Each triode section of the tube acts as a class A amplifier.
Because of this, the tubes can be used in microphone preamplifiers, instrument amps, and recording equipment that is equipped with vacuum tubes. The tube features a double triode with separate cathodes, and because of their design, they are low noise.
They requires a noval nine-contact socket, but can be mounted in any position.
Nice and quiet, excellent tone, dynamics and clarity!
Test strong!

Mostly are G.E. / Marconi / RCA / Sylvania / Westinghouse
Both short or long grey + black plates are available.
Test strong like new with very closely matched sections.
All have had very little use.
Lettering and logo prints are all excellent!
All these vintage tubes still do test very strong, like new /very close!
All tubes have been tested twice on my mutual conductance calibrated B+K tester
They will test at or close to new.
No gas leaks or shorts.

I have many more tubes then I need
Most of these tubes for vintage amps,pre-amps,tuners,tube testers and other vintage tube gear.
All tubes have been recently tested good and strong using a B+K tube tester
No leaks/shorts!
Many tubes are NOS,some are also NIB
Kindly email me for any information
