Harbeth LS5/12A BBC Monitors (Rosewood) Serial numbers: 512a, 512b, Its interesting, I will bet there is a story or legacy to this pair.
I will admit, I have long been a BBC badged speaker fan. I have been servicing, modifying, and building (mostly) preamplifiers and power amplifiers for over 35 years. I have always trust doing evaluations on this range of speakers, among a few others (Dynamic, Planar, Electrostats) like dipole designs, all of the BBC badged speakers have a notable transparency and openness, encompassing a great range BBC inspired speakers. I have always owned a few pairs...
I sought these speakers out, because of the remarkable Dynaudio 15W-7508 / D-260 driver compliment, for the 8 ohm design, 3" voice coil on the woofer, improves power handling as well and the bass weigh and power. I understand the 'cult following' in the Japanese market. I also really like that the Dynaudio tweeter has a protective grill. These speakers will move the owner to great emotions and tears... but never from when an object unexpectedly meets tweeter ;-( I will admit, that am jumpy when people, get near my Esotar 330D on another speaker... but never these.
These speakers represent a reasonable load, and preform equally well on solid state or vacuum tubes, output transformerless or transformer coupled. They have the right balance of power handling and sensitivity.
I bought these used ~5 years ago. They have some wear that I tried to document in 3 images. Both speakers, have minor nicks [which purplex me greatly, I can't figure it out..] in the upper left front baffle and some minor markings which look, like they used 'Vince B's cones' or a Totem type tuning device, could not render in an image. I bet these speaker have 'an interesting story' or legacy. I will admit my intrigue of a model number speaker LS5/12A - serial numbered 512a/b... was portion to my buying them. There are mysteries... lols.
