Listed for sale here is a vintage Vector Research VR-2500 Stereo Receiver in good pre-owned working condition. Physically however, there are signs of minor shelf-wear but it is still presentable overall. The receiver has great tonal quality with good vocal presence and stage imaging.
Today they remain quite unknown. Vector Research was a small company based in Chatsworth California that produced high quality audio gear. Vector Research (VR) was taking aim at the top brands by developing products for the high end of the market with units priced above $1,000 MSRP (in excess of several thousands dollars in today's money). VR amps often appeared and rated in Japan audio magazine "Stereo Sound in the early 1980s.
This Receiver, the model VR-2500 is a great performer in tonal quality that could outshine many of its modern counterparts today. The original line-up from Vector Research was produced by Crown Radio of Japan and share resemblance to many Rotel and Harman Kardon units from the same era. Rumor has it that the later models from Vector Research which were manufactured by NEC, are not just in the same league as the originals
This Receiver is a rare and magnificent amp, having a great tonal quality with good vocal presence and imaging. These qualities alone could outperform that of many modernity today priced for thousand's of dollars. Though this model being a little brother (22 Watts x2 ) in the line-up, the first generation Vector Research was built to pro standards. The box and knobs/switches are all metal. Be mindful that in most instances at home with an average listening area, we hardly need any output in excess of 5 watt/channel (if you are not using hard-driven speakers or having the need to play loud often). A smaller output amp like this would always have the advantage of churning out sweeter and warmer tonal quality.
Block diagram is printed on top of the case, only a few high end Sansui amps had that feature (AU-11000, AU-20000, Professional and Definition series). The DC circuit layout uses twin pairs of matched discreet black/green NEC output transistors; huge power transformer allows for easy handling of transients and real-time resolving of dynamic peaks in full-scale music.
