Here is the big guy. The holy grail of receivers. This unit is in very nice condition inside and out.
Now 40 years later those that know this piece know that all 1980's needs extensive restoration and mods on the power supply board to ensure stability and longevity..Just changing a few caps to get it to run is just passing a problem on to the next guy.
The biggest design flaw with the 1980 is the location of the main power supply board. It is located on the bottom in the middle. The heat produced by the regulators literally bake the circuit board. Leading to all kinds of issues. None of them good. Besides the cooking components the circuit design uses FETs as a current source to jump start the regulators. Well they are prone to failure. Thus another weak ink in the design. If you short out the outputs good luck finding a replacement.
Fortunately smart guys, not me, have developed solutions from their extensive experience working on the 1980. Through my research I have gathered all that expert advice and have undertaken an extensive restoration that incorporates all their recommendations. A daunting task ,especially the first time round.
So the first thing is getting to the heart of the unit ,the power supply board. All caps and transistors replaced. The 80V regulators moved off the board and mounted on the big driver heatsinks. Two current source boards made and installed to replace the FET circuitry. Two new relays with mods.Important zeners replaced .
Berquist sil pads used, new thermal compound on the precious output transistors.
All the boards recapped and most of the transistors replaced as per recommendations. The only board I have not recapped is the tuner.
High quality caps and superior transistors used. Painstakingly gain matched!
Four new power supply caps as well.
Every board closely inspected and reflowed where needed. And it was needed a lot.
I spent days researching and many more days working on it. A slow methodical process but I believe the new owner will appreciate my efforts.
Only some one like me would spend the kind of time I did to do it right. That and I'm retired and it keeps me from doing domestic duties( ok,sometimes).
This unit is in very nice condition with only the odd mark.
Amp section set to specs. Controls and switches properly cleaned. Total rebuild of the phono board for optimum performance.
Its now an amazing example of a SX-1980 that has been properly restored.
Now after spending hours and hours on this piece of history there is no way I am about to risk shipping this without a proper shipping crate. So I have had one built by a good Cammer friend who is a cabinet maker/perfectionist. See the attached pics.
I also take the time to clean the 4 sets of pin connectors /driver board. These carbon up and turn black. They are now nice and shiny and doing there job.Picture of the stock driver board attached.
Note I am a pro shipper. See my feedback!
I will provide my phone # to serious buyers. I prefer to chat about my work and meet the new owner.
I also provide a short video of the unit taken just before packing to the new owner.
This is a true collectors piece.
I am confident the new owner will be pleased!
I prefer EMT.
