For sale is a fully restored McIntosh MA-6100 preamp/power amp. This amplifier has had an over the top, from the ground up restoration (more details below). We did what we could with the cosmetics from the front, top and side views, most all of the cosmetic issues are concealed. The biggest issues are detailed below as well. From where it started, it turned out to be a great looking and performing unit.
Electronically, each and every board was gone over with a fine toothed comb. Every electrolytic capacitor, tantalum capacitor as well any known troublesome transistors and diodes were replaced in this amp. Each stage was brought back to life and thoroughly tested/verified against the service manual values. All resistors were checked for drift and replaced as necessary. All four output transitors were upgraded with much tougher modern transistors and the protection circuit was rebuilt with all new parts. The power amp input transistors and pre drivers were also upgraded. In the preamp and phono stage, all capacitors and any troublesome silicon bits were upgraded. Every single board was gone over and brought back to 100% factory specs, if not better than. All controls were thoroughly cleaned multiple times to get everything perfectly scratch free and trouble free. Every input and output is then thoroughly tested. This amp is plug and play ready to go and sounds great!
The performance of this preamp/amplifier is, in a word, incredible. It is absolutely noise free and distortion free all the way and down the volume knob. Lows, mids and highs are all perfectly balanced on our ADS L710 test speakers. Bass is huge and tight without being overbearing, mids are sweet and singing like a tube amp, highs are clear as day without being harsh or unpleasant. It has an open, airy sound and there is always plenty of reserve power. The EQ is very powerful with only a few controls. This amp now sounds and performs exactly like a McIntosh should, operation is noise and trouble free. Again, this unit is plug and play ready to jam out for MANY YEARS to come!
Cosmetically, we did what we could to bring beauty back to this MA-6100. The wood case was refinished and the glass was repainted to eliminate (as much as possible) the typical bubbling that occurs on these vintage McIntosh dials, and it did turn out very nice. All lamps were upgraded to LEDs. The glass has one small crack in the bottom left corner that was repaired and stabilized as much as possible - and after painting it, it's barely noticeable unless you're looking for it. The amp itself came to us with rust issues that we tried to minimize as much as possible, then stabilized. Some of the chassis has permanent rust stains which has affected the lettering. Please study the pics carefully. There is not a lot we can do about the back side of the unit, but it does NOT affect the functionality and all of the cosmetic issues are well hidden with the factory wood case on. The wood case itself had some water damage on the back bottom side (including the bottom back strap crumbling away) but all of the water damaged bits have been removed and the rest of the wood is still there and solid.
This unit will be shipped incredibly carefully including full insurance with UPS. We strive to make every transaction as smooth as possible! Please contact us if you have any questions!
