Here's a rare pair of Vandersteen Model 4 speakers. This model was a short-run predecessor to the Model 3 and 5.

It is a 5-way, bi-ampable, tri-wireable system with 11" subs, 8" woofer, 4.5" mid, 1" tweeter and 3/4" super tweeter on each side. They are large - 50h x 18w x 17d inches and weigh about 100 pounds each. As you might expect, inside the sock is a stack of low-diffraction cabinets - one for each driver. I took some pictures of the stack through the top and through the sock.

The weak point of this model were the 11" subwoofers - their surrounds would disintegrate over time and are difficult to replace. I have upgraded the subwoofers with a like-new pair of 12" injection molded graphite woofers from an Infinity SSW-212 subwoofer. This subwoofer has been described as the "holy grail" of Infinity subwoofers. These woofers are a good match the rest of the drivers produce great bass.

The Model 4's were usually used with an electronic crossover for the subwoofers, which I do not have. However, a receiver's subwoofer crossover does the job well. I have mine set up this way with a separate power amp.

Now for the bad news. The top plate of one side is missing (lost in a move), one of the vertical poles needs repair (gluing), the sock has some pulls, and the wood has some dents, chips and scratches. But, all the drivers and crossover are in good shape and the entire systems works fine.

My grand plan was to remove the sock and cut away the outer structure to let the stack of drives show, similar the Model 5 without its cover, and then refinish them. But I don't have the time to follow through with this plan. I'm hoping that another enthusiast like them as-is or will take on this project.

Local pick-up only. In the San Diego area.
