The X10D 'missing link' by Musical Fidelity is the unit that started it all. One of the first widely publicized tube buffer amps out there, it made a hit, and rightly so. The use for this unit was two fold. Firstly, there was ability for this unit to more closely impedance match equipment that otherwise suffered from less than an optimal match. This could result in a thinner sounding performance and lack of bass impact. The other possible situation is recordings/equipment that have digital or Solid State sound to them. Digital has an accuracy but sometimes also a glare or hardness. Solid State devices may also have a lifeless presentation to them. Without further explanation, let's just say that the introduction of a tube buffer in the mix helps those problems out in the way of matching, producing better harmonics, and making impact what is the beat of the music in the first place............................

The components changed out in the MF buffer all have one thing in common. They are of a higher quality, and in some cases replace components that are old and worn out. This would be especially true of tubes and electrolytic capacitors. We all know that tubes have a given life when in use in a circuit, but did you know that an electrolytic capacitor has even more of a problem this way? To be more exact, an electrolytic capacitor has a shelf life, whether being used in a circuit OR NOT! Even though I knew of the life of these devices when being used in circuit, I was unaware until recently that these components age (at a different rate when NOT in use) regardless of their use. Sort of like a battery, they are filled with a compound that eventually dries out. Their shelf life begins the day that they are manufactured. In the MF unit, I replaced every single cap there was.

..........Going further, I also replaced many of the film capacitors with higher quality types. Lastly, many of the resistors used in the signal path were replaced. In the end, this unit performs at least as well as new, and most likely better. The Phillips tubes were replaced with Electro-Harmonex Russian tubes, but you may use any 6922 tube that you prefer.

I especially was pleased to hear the performance of my Grado SE225i phones with this unit. I usually considered the Grado's as too bright and too forward for my taste, yet with the tube buffer in circuit, I was surprised at the increased musicality now offered by this combination. That is only one example of the use for this unit. Often people use it between a CD player or other digital source and the input on their equipment.
