Very Nice Example - Sounds very good

Worth a look if you've ever wanted a nice Thorens

I just got this from the local original owner - from early 70s - in storage since 1990 - out of box once and played a few hours since in attempt to digitize some LPs. Then back in the box.

Is like a time capsule - very complete, very nice condition, factory foam packing (cardboard box not factory).

I'd rate condition strong 8 out of 10, as compared to a few other unrestored examples - probably more like an 8.5. No significant scratches or nicks to the wood - rest of cosmetics v nice, dust cover has some hazing on top but better than a lot - and not cracked or broken at rear hinges (many are).

I hooked it up as was curious if it would play - yes it does. And sounds very good. A lot better than the last TD160 I had. Being well stored in packaging all these years has preserved it better than average. Everything but dust cover is fully enclosed in the foam packaging, which seems to have made a difference. Even the cords are still soft and flexible. After going through a few dozen pieces of vintage gear (ok - more like 2-300), one starts to respect little clues like the cables being still nice.

Sound? Good indeed - but not going to blow smoke up the nethersides saying stuff like - "it's the bomb - incredible, stupendous, better than sex man, the best, true audiophile glory, buy this and live in bliss forever". Uh - no. Sounded better than I was expecting, and better by far than the last TD160 I had - and it compares well to other $500-700 vintage tables. My Sota Sapphire with Dynavector 10x5 absolutely kills it though - and thats only a $1500 setup. An awful lot of guys are running a lot fancier gear, and can/should expect fancier results. But a very nice TD-160 it truly is.

I'm not a Thorens expert - thats your job? But apparently the TD-160 came out in 1972, as well as the less expensive TD-165. 165 used different tone arm, motor, and I think different spindle bearing? Overall, the 160 is condsidered the better table.

I had a 165 brand new in early 70s, and it was a good sounding table then - running a Shure V15. But 40 years later your results may vary - time is not your friend with this stuff. I suppose thats why I was disapointed in the last 160 I had a few years ago - it wasnt as good as I had expected/remembered/dreamed?. This one has stood up a lot better - not saying its like new, but its closer than some.

It definately should be serviced - a v nice example like this deserves some love, and it really is a necessary step with any vintage gear you actually want to use - especially turntables, it seems to me. It was skipping a bit. I may not have had it set up properly, but more likely in need of lubrication. Old belt works still and it keeps speed fine, but new belt wise.

If you prefer, I can have it serviced by my very good vintage tech. Probably run $100-150.

But thought I'd offer as is, as some may want to tinker themselves. It sounds too good to have any serious issues.

If it doesnt sell by time my tech works through my other stuff currently on his bench, I'll "get 'er done" and price will go up accordingly.

Will include the Shure M91ED that it came to me with - no doubt original. Seems useable as is, although new stylus always a good idea unless you have access to microscope for proper examination.

Comes with - owners manual, Shure M91ED with stylus guard, Thorens branded headshell thing - clear plastic - stylus guard? original headshell.

In central Alberta. Am willing to ship - has factory foam packing which helps survival.

Can deliver for free to Calgary or Red Deer, on my schedule. Edmonton maybe as well, for gas money.

Email or cell/removed phone number for privacy not after 9 pm Mountain please

Owners manual (original), factory packing foams top and bottom, Shure M91ED with stylus guard, Thorens plastic headshell guard?, original headshell, dustcover, all original parts.
