Nice set - quite sure all original.
551s came out I think same time as 662 and 442, which were later models based on the 66 and 44. Late 70s?
Not an expert - but I do know any top line Dittons are not easy to find, and especially in this condition. Very solid and well put together with nice materials.
Solid 8.5 out of 10 for cosmetics, as compared to several other unrestored sets. Cant really recall any defects that caught my eye - although probably are some small nicks and such. Grills are v good. Wood very good.
All drivers are working - which is a good thing, as are worth a few bucks if had to replace them.
Feature seperate tone controls for mid and tweeter. All work and not scratchy. I do see the red "fuse" light glows a bit at higher volumes, on one speaker. But speaker does not cut out.
Speaker connectors are nice mulitway from factory - banana plug plus drilled posts for bare wire.
Sound? Personal so make no promises. But definately contenders in the $500-700 range of vintage speakers. As they are. Bass digs pretty deep and is smooth, rich, and articulate as Celestion are known for. Tweeters are known for very good highs
Sound Update: Just tried these with my 60 watt tube monoblocs, and they really stepped up their game. As compared to running on decent solid state - quite an improvement. Bass, mids and highs all took a jump. And very nice tone. Not as good as my Tyler Linbrooks ($10,000 new) - but really impressive in the $1000 and under price range. Not saying you need tubes with these - but am saying that they responded favorably to higher quality power (in the $3000 range amp and pre).
Possibly these have even more to give if you recapped the crossovers. The Brit speakers seem to respond quite noticeably to new caps - maybe moreso than some other brands? If I dont sell, will redo the crossovers and see what that does.
