Sakura Systems/47 Labs are famous for their excellent-sounding and minimalist designs in their preamps, amps and digital components. They use excellent quality parts - as few as possible so as not to screw-up the sound and they use a very short signal path.
There are always outboard power supplies, designed for particular components. In the Reference Series, they were the instantly-identifiable and unique black cylinders, like the 4700 'Humpty" and 4799 "Dumpty".
Use the link provided above to access the page about the origins of Sakura Systems and the philosophy behind their designs.
TO quote from their DAC page:
"the issue is not either.... Non-Oversampling or Higher-rate-sampling, but the use of the digital filter can cause smearing in the time domain.
We can confirm this smearing effect on the sound caused by the use of digital filter rather easily through listening experiments. This leads us to believe that the current problem with CD is not the limitation of 16bit/44.1kHz format, but the use of the digital filter which is preventing us to experience the true possibilities and the limitations of 16bit/44.1kHz format. The sound of Gemini is enough to prove this matter."
Once you have heard this minimalist design play a CD and you hear it blow-away 96/24 and 192/24 resolution players that are not built as well, you'll realize that 47 Labs knows what they're talking about.
For sale here is one of their fabulous-sounding digital rigs, featuring the Model 4713 'Flatfish' CD player/transport, the 4799 'Dumpty'' power supply, and the important parts of their model 4705 Progression/Gemini D/A Converter.
The Gemini DAC chassis is missing, as it was originally purchased with the dual DAC (mono) options, but was later sold with one DAC removed. The heart of the extra DAC has been mounted on a spiked, maple board - all the required parts are here, and if you look at the photos you'll see names like Black gate, Wima and Vishay there, along with the famous TDA 1543T DAC chip. Both the DAC and the Flatfish use the 4799 Dumpty as their power supply.
The 4713 Flatfish sold for $5000.00 US. The Dumpty power supply sold for $2250.00 US. The Gemini DAC sold for $4500.00, but I have assigned only $250.00 US for the DAC in this configuration for the total of $7500.00 US value, which was over $11,000.00 Cdn back when these components were new.
You can have the whole set-up for only $3900.00 Cdn. or less if you don't want the DAC
