This beautiful piece epitomizes vintage audio at its best. This top of the line unit is an easy 9/10 in my vintage rating. Good luck finding a mark. There is the odd small mark but really ,really hard to see. From the solid aluminum knobs right through the entire piece is quality construction and design.
I will likely never see another SA-9900 as nice. Thus it deserved an extensive restoration help ensure reliable and great sounding performance.
The only electrolytic caps not replaced were the two power supply caps. If the new owner so desires I can install perfect fit Nichicon KG series 22,000 uf, 63V,lug for another $200.00.
Had to do a good deal of research before I dove in.There are a lot of transistors that needed to be replaced based on some of the best vintage Pioneer expert's advice.
Many of them required drilling the circuit board to accommodate the bigger leads of the upgraded devices.I have to say this is definitely one of the more challenging pieces to work on I have come across. But these units need attention. High powered units even more so. As soon as I opened up this unit I could see swollen caps on the main power supply board and signs of heat.
So this board got a lot of attention. Voltage regulators upgraded. New thermal compound on the heat sinks. Re flowed solder connections. More transistors replaced and top quality caps installed.I will include a lot of pictures trying to show the before and after restoration. I use top quality caps. Nichicon PW,FG,KW and a lot of Elna Silmic II's in the signal path. Added lots of Panasonic and Wima stacked film caps as well. Not cheap. But cheap compared to what the labour rates would be if you paid some one to do this. This was a tedious project.
This unit has its original outputs. They were pulled , the old thermal compound removed and new compound and new mica installed.
Without extensive dis assembly you cannot clean the controls. I have added a pic that shows what the unit looks like when you have to access the tone and switch sections. Not for the faint of heart or one without patience and a methodical approach.
Amp section set to specs. All functions tested. All three lamps replaced . One for the power indicator and two for the volume control back light (very cool). I note in my pics the lighting is a bit too bright to show that feature.
I believe there were about 34 transistors replaced. I gain matched were appropriate.
I spent well over a week restoring this beauty. I enjoyed the challenge.(most of the time) I hope the new owner appreciates the effort.
Speaking of effort I just remembered some thing else I did. Behind the face plate there was foam stripping placed to help the 3 lamps maximize illumination. Well that foam basically turned to black goo. That was removed and new foam cut and placed in the exact pattern. Only a nut job would spend the time to do that!
