Aurora Borealis 845 SE DHT amplifier

Based upon a design by Jack Elliano and using his output and interstage transformers, the Aurora Borealis is a world-class 15 Watt Class A stereo amplifier utilizing the legendary 845 directly-heated triode in single-ended mode. This amp was designed with the concerns and aesthetics for the audiophile in mind, with extra features unavailable even in small production amplifiers.

This amplifier is constructed upon three chassis, one for the power supply (for noise and magnetic isolation), plus a chassis for each of the left and right channels, sitting on separate custom-constructed ¼” solid copper plates. Aside from the beauty of solid copper, copper's electrical qualities offer the best ground plane for the lowest noise. Having 3 chassis also allows each output chassis to be placed very close the speaker to keep speaker wire as short as possible.

Three chassis also means that it is a DUAL MONO design, meaning each channel has a completely independent circuit with dedicated components. As a single ended amp, it affords the best design for detail and refinement: when the signal goes in, the same undistorted signal comes out-- unlike push-pull amps.

Finally, the design also has a two-switch turn-on which allows the filaments to heat up first before the B+ plates, thus preventing cathode stripping in the expensive, high voltage 845 tubes. This dramatically extends their life.

The power supply consists of oil caps in the filter supply as well as oil filled by-pass caps on the very large low impedance power supply caps (last cap in the power supply). This allows for the best of both worlds: low, tight, bass and clear, silky smooth highs.

This two-stage amp provides exceptional musicality, linearity and less than 1% distortion. The front-end tube is the 6HV6; which is coupled to the 845 tube via a parafed 1:1 interstage transformer. The coupling caps are Jensen paper in oil; the speaker connectors are made by Cardas; the ultrapath caps are polypropylene caps and are made by Solen; all signal wire is pure silver, both in and out. Non-signal wire is silver-coated copper. It doesn't get any better than this.

Because of the amp's two switch turn-on, the 845 tube life was extended by the gentle turn on, thus usage was minimal: no more than 5% of it's expected 2000+ hours of its life. Therefore, 95% of the tubes life remains.

This amp is available for auditioning. Purchase it now at full price (Buy It Now) and if after 14 days after arrival you are unsatisfied for any reason, you may return it for a full refund less shipping. No questions asked. (This does not apply to bidding or auction).
