Sold - 1300 pickup at my door

May 24 - Reduced

Just spending some time listening after switching out the 16 ohm woofers to 8 ohms (also vintage). On some quality solid state these bad boys are seriously good.

Free delivery to Vancouver or Victoria or plans on the way? I am planning a road trip with a minivan to Victoria sometime next month or 2. A little gas money if a detour. This is worth a few hundred $, as you will know if ever checked out costs to ship big speakers. Also saves crating costs.

Custom built - using very good examples of some good vintage JBL drivers

With 8 ohm woofers - i have a set of 16 ohm available if you prefer....will swap them for same price

Or can buy the 16s -.$200 extra..

I very much like the sound - v good mids and highs. Not blowing smoke here - had a few people now here these and all are v impressed with the high end - detailed, very clean and clear but not harsh or bright. And bass is good too.(now that have switched to 8 ohm woofers, from 16)

Very efficient - probably around 100 dB. Tweeter is 108. mid is 100, and 8 ohm woofers about 95 or better.

Good with tube amps, even low power - or lower power quality ss amps.

Built in Edmonton by a gentleman who obviously knows his stuff. Build quality here is quite a bit above typical home built.

Replacement on these if built by same fellow would be $3000 plus.

Built about 3 years ago.

Condition? Cosmetics about 7 to 7.5 out of 10 - as compared to when new. Cabinets are showing several small defects and nicks in the veneer - moved few too many times to keep them perfect. One dust cap one woofer dented a little. Few small pickers on one grill. Functionally are very good. And still very presentable and attractive. Just don't want to overinflate claims of beauty.

Note - photos here are with 16 ohm woofers installed. The "new" 8s are actually nicer looking - a little blacker, although one dust cap is slightly dented.

All vintage JBL drivers

Tweeter - 075 "bullet" tweeter. Desireable and costly component. As in $400-700 a pair for good ones. Then he spent a few hours with special jigs and things to polish them up real nice.

Mids - HP5 Harmon by JBL. From either the HPB8 model or the HP88F. Quite rare, and very good sound. The builder tried another model or 2 and preferred these.

Woofers - 2205A - 8 ohm. Alnico magnets. Nice bass. One dust cap showing a bit of damage, otherwise v nice shape. Note - the photos here are of the 16 ohm 2225J which are 16 ohm and were installed.

* The 16 ohm 2225J are still available if you buy these speakers and want the 16 ohm instead. Will switch them. The builder used the 16 ohm, as were designed for vocal. Or you can buy these as an extra set for an extra $200.

Cabinets are of baltic birch, with maple veneer.

Crossovers were custom built by a retired audio engineer. Main crossover is 1200 to seperate out the bass. Second level crossover at 5400.

Custom bases that the cabs sit loose on.

Large but not super heavy - guess at no more than 50 lbs? Birch ply is lighter than mdf.

36.5 in high on the bases - 31.5 without
20 in wide
19 in deep

The right person will really enjoy these. If possible listen to them first. I liked them with the 16s, but not enough bass for me. When i switched the 16 ohm woofers out and installed the 8s, i became very attracted to the sound. They always had good mids and highs - better than a lot of speakers actually - detail, clarity, good tone. But were a bit lacking in bass for my musical tastes with the 16 ohm. The woofer switch made quite a difference. In my opinion, they sound better than good. Contenders in the $1500-2000 price range of used speakers for sound quality, and possibly worth more than that being JBL.

Can deliver to Calgary, Red Deer, Vancouver, Victoria, places in between - for free. On my schedule.

Interesting trades considered.
