March 28 - sold anp only for $1200. Carver still available - $400 now, more if i take to tech.
March 20 update...Pending sale on amp...should know in a week or so if solid. Carver preamp would then be available alone.
Quite rare vintage amp. Now selling with a well regarded vintage Carver preamp. Amp has been thoroughly rebuilt - and is very well regarded as to build quality and sound in the collector/vintage community. The designers of this series went on immediately to start Accuphase, and as one who's owned both sets - i can see the similarities.
Now offered with a good preamp - the Carver C-4000..The better the preamp, the better the sound. An quite impressed with the Carver - I think you will be too. Worth in the $4-500 zone on it's own.
The Carver is working and sounding fine - but couple things. One bank of the tone controls does not work - so is running "tone defeat" - or - "flat" = no tone control. If you try using tone controls, one channel drops out entirely. Controls do work on this one channel - probably a cleaning issue. Previous owner spent quite a bit of time cleaning switches and stuff, but obviously more needs to be done if you want tone control. The volume and input selector switches are great - no static. There's a lot of buttons and features and I cant say all are working. I can say the preamp is useable as is and sounds really quite good - better than quite a few I've tried. As with any vintage piece worth owning, I'd recommend taking it to a good vintage tech for service and get the tone controls working. I'm used to not having tone controls on my higher end amps, so no big deal personaly.
About $6-700 worth of work done on this amp a couple years back, and then only a few hundred hours use on it. If you do some research - check out "Echo Wars Kenwood 700M". The guy is well known for quality rebuilds on these, and also considers them some of the best amps out there. Although he did not redo this amp, my tech out in Ontario knows him and they collaborated on the rebuild of this amp. A lot of new parts - power/filter caps, output transistors, etc. I have the list.
Cosmetically its not the best example - but is still presentable, for me anyhow. About a 7 to 7.5 out of 10 for cosmetics, as compared to several other unrestored examples. Some fine scratches and defects on faceplate and maybe a knob or 2. The paint is faded on the chassis, and the top case is a bit dented and some rust. Top case actually came from a worse condition amp - when i got this one it had no top case at all. A bit of paint on the case would do a lot.
With a good preamp this is a very good sounding solid state amp. I say comparable to Bryston 4BST (which i owned at one time and did some comparing), or my hot rod Technics SE9600 (also for sale).
Very nice features including - 3 sets of speakers, plus switching for them on the amp. Left and Right power levels. 2 inputs.
Lots of power - 170 per channel into 8 ohms. Am not sure, but thought i read somewhere that it delivers 300 or more into 4 ohms? And can drive 2 ohm loads. Heavy built - over 60 lbs.
At one time i had the "Trilogy" - this amp, matching 700C preamp, 700T tuner. Just amp now. Made an awesome stack - see the photo here. The quality of this amp cosmetically fit right in. This amp is on the bottom of the stack.
Would consider selling seperately, but amp has to go first - at $1400 amp alone. I got a good deal on the preamp, and am passing it on to help sell the amp.
May consider interesting trades.
