Who else is of the opinion that the 12BH7 will sound better than the 12AU7?

Using 12AU7 in the input wasn't as clean sounding as are the 12BH7 or 6FQ7/6CG7.
Depending on the pre amp using 12BH7 in the input was nice but the 6FQ7/6CG7 was even better.
All most every circuit where I subbed a 12BH7 in for a 12AU7 the sound has improved.
Some excellent sounding 12BH7A tubes are:
Sylvania with green yellow print
RCA black plate or even better are the charcoal plate (non shiny black plate)
Raytheon 1958 BP

You may want to watch the heater current though on some units,
given the design was intended for 12AU7 but other then that they run the same circuits.
Typical 12AU7's are in the 100-200V range (except for the 5963: 60-70V)
12BH7
TWIN TRIODE
www.op316.com/tubes/mw/image/12bh7age.pdf

With so many 12AU7 variants out there (only the 12AX7 has more variants)
Here are some very good references on the types of 12AU7 tubes available:
They include:
12AU7
12AU7A
5814 (If you can find the CBS Hytron 5818, do try them!!!)
5963
6189
ECC82
ECC802
There are others, too - and that's not even counting the variance among brands.
Even then, there are "triple-mica's," different style getters, 5 Stars, JAN's, and many other brands.
I must have about 2 dozen different 12AU7-type tubes, and only 2-3 are actually 12AU7's
These tubes all have different flavors and the bottom line is to use whatever sounds good to you no matter what the opinions of others

Available 12BH7 Black Long Plate Tubes:
-G.E.
-Sylvania
-RCA

Here's a brief list of some audio useful loctals, and their octal equivalent:

7A4 - loctal 6J5 (1/2 of a 6SN7GT)

7AF7 - mu of 16.5, very similar otherwise to a 6SN7 or 6CG7/6FQ7

7B5 - loctal 6K6

7C5 - loctal 6V6GT

7C7 - loctal 6SJ7 (or really close to it!)

7F7 - loctal 6SL7

7F8 - no equivalent, mu of 48, rp of 3300, twin VHF triode, used by jc morrison in his "Siren Song" preamp
as written up in Sound Practices.

7N7 - loctal 6SN7GT

7Z4 - fullwave indirectly heated rectifier, a bit more current capability (100ma./plate) than a 6V4/EZ80. Probably
make a nice preamp rectifier!

All the tubes above use 6.3 volts on the heaters!

Another possibility is the 14XXX series of loctals. Almost all the tubes above are available in 12.6 volt versions. There
is no 14B5 or 14Z4 though.
By using a 7F7 voltage amp, a 7N7 or 7AF7 phase splitter, and a pair of 7C5s as outputs, you can make a nice
push-pull all loctal amplifier! You can use a 7Z4 rectifiers if you don't go SS!

I have many of these tubes in stock, drop me a note if you are interested!

12AX7 Vacuum Tube Reference Information:
ECC83: This European nomenclature for 12AX7.
ECC803/ECC803S/E83CC: This "premium" version of European made 12AX7. The "S" on the ECC803S indicates "select" and are usually gold pin.
These are usually found on Telefunken and Siemens branded tubes and a very rare Radio tron ecc803S version from the Philips factory in Australia.
12ax7: Original version of the 12ax7.
Early production was manufactured in the USA by Tung Sol, RCA, Sylvania, GE etc. The earliest 12ax7 have larger 17mm plates.
The 12ax7 version without an "A" suffix is to be used only in parallel filament circuits, so do not use these in a “series” circuit. This is an unusual problem to run into as they are normally found in TV sets.
The best way to tell if your circuit is a series circuit is by examining all of the tubes and looking at the voltages (voltages other than 6 and 12 volts). If all tubes in your circuit start with 6 or 12 (except for 5 Volt rectifiers) , then it is a parallel.
12ax7a: Can be used in series or parallel circuits.
Many manufacturers marked 12AX7's as 12ax7 without the “A” suffix well into the 60's and 70's,
but these are most often 12AX7A's marked as 12AX7.
12AD7: Non-microphonic/low hum version of the 12AX7 made by Sylvania and NEC in Japan.
Great for audio applications that uses a 12AX7.
12DT7, 12DM7, 12DF7: special quality low noise/low microphonic versions of the 12AX7.
Usually branded as Westinghouse or Raytheon.
7025: Hifi low noise version of the 12AX7 with all other specifications being the same as 12AX7.
Tubes marked with both 12AX7 and 7025 are usually low noise as well.
5751: Military version/drop in replacement for the 12AX7, but is actually different.
The 5751 has identical plate resistance to the 12AX7, but the gain is 70 compared to 100 for the 12AX7.
Early production 5751 have extra thick mica spacers (often three know as triple mica) and extra support rods to minimize microphonic response. Many 5751 also have matched triode units.
7729: CBS made industrial version of the 12AX7 with gold pins for special applications requiring reliability and low noise/low microphonics.
6681: The mobile version of a 12AX7. Usually these are the same as a regular 12ax7 which have been tested and screened to perform well in circuits with large variations in filament voltage.
7058: Same as a 12AX7 but with a 13.5 volt non-tapped filament.
Can be used in circuits which do not utilize the 6.3V filament tap. Performance is same as regular 12ax7.
ECC83: This European nomenclature for 12AX7.
ECC803/ECC803S/E83CC: This "premium" version of European made 12AX7.
The "S" on the ECC803S indicates "select" and are usually gold pin. These are usually found on Telefunken and Siemens branded tubes and a very rare Radiotron ecc803S version from the Philips factory in Australia.

Jul 18, 18 10:10pm
**In many of our lifetimes we have been able to choose local North American, European/from older Tesla plants, Asian, tubes some NOS and now from several countries still producing audio vacuum tubes.
Today even some Chinese and Russian tubes sound better than some of the NOS stuff out there.
Have we all heard the odd what is being sold as "NOS" which quite sadly sound dull and boomy...????

Offering up for sale is whatever stock I've left of NOS vintage Russian 6N1P Tubes for sale @ $65.00 a matched pair
Includes shipping to anywhere in Canada

Some 6N1P tubes from 1960's now are very rare
and yet they can produce most accurate balanced smooth sound, with excellent detail!
The 6N1P (Russian: 6Н1П) is a Russian-made miniature 9-pin medium gain double triode vacuum tube intended for use as a line audio amplifier and cathode driver.
Similar to the 6922 / 6DJ8 tube type is equivalent to the European ECC88 / E88CC tube and can be used in certain 6922, 6DJ8 or ECC88 designed circuits.

If you have a good pre amp or phono stage, you need at least gold grade.
The 6N1P (Premium) tube is a very noticeable upgrade over the Sovtek 6922 tube and Electro Harmonix 6922 tube.
They are incredibly durable and can handle the punishment of modern pre-amps, including those made by Audible Illusions.
They excel in detail, speed, and sound stage.
The highs have air and sound natural.
Made in the "Voskhod" factory in Kaluga (USSR)
Ultra low noise tubes and made in Russia.
This premium Russian built NOS 6922 tube replacement is also known by various Russian names
These tubes are of premium quality in both sound and construction.

Brand New tubes all in factory bulk packaging..
Low investment priced @ $65.00 for matched pairs.

Basic data:
Uf = 6.3 V, If = 600 mA
µ = 35
Ia = 7.5 mA
S = 4.35 mA/V
Pa = 2.2 W

The 6N1P has similar ratings to the 6DJ8 and in the past was sometimes re-branded as such, however differences between the two types (the 6N1P requires almost twice the filament current and has only one third the S value) mean they are not always directly interchangeable, depends on design of amp/pre amp.
The S is about 4.35 ma/V, the 6DJ8/ECC88 has a S of 12.5 ma/V and a gain of 33 and a lower internal resistance.
However, the 6N1P is typically more linear for a given load.
It is therefore inaccurate to say that these two tubes are identical.
The closest western equivalent to the 6N1P is the well known 6BQ7A.
A ruggedized/extended ratings version of the tube is designated 6N1P-EV (Russian: 6Н1П-ЕВ).
It has currently found a use as a driver tube in hi-fi tube amplifiers (such as Audio Research models VS55 and VS110) because of its excellent low distortion and low noise characteristics.
These tubes were manufactured by the "Voskhod" plant in Kaluga, Russia

6N1P is considered to be the most balanced tube made in its category
and the 6N1P is considered to sound the best out of any of the 6N1P tubes.

6N1P from 1960's is now very rare, this one should produce the same balanced and smooth sound, with detail and alive

These tubes produce the highest quality sound and are considered quite zippy!

These 6N1P tubes can be an excellent replacement for the 6922, 6DJ8's and the E88CC but do but have a heavier filament current draw, so be sure the power supply can handle the extra power.
These EV/EB series tubes have a typically 5,000 - 10,000 hours life.
These tubes have been checked for gas leaks, shorts, noise and microphonics.
