Who else is of the opinion that the 12BH7 will sound better than the 12AU7?

Using 12AU7 in the input wasn't as clean sounding as are the 12BH7 or 6FQ7/6CG7.
Depending on the pre amp using 12BH7 in the input was nice but the 6FQ7/6CG7 was even better.
All most every circuit where I subbed a 12BH7 in for a 12AU7 the sound has improved.
Some excellent sounding 12BH7A tubes are:
Sylvania with green yellow print
RCA black plate or even better are the charcoal plate (non shiny black plate)
Raytheon 1958 BP

You may want to watch the heater current though on some units,
given the design was intended for 12AU7 but other then that they run the same circuits.
Typical 12AU7's are in the 100-200V range (except for the 5963: 60-70V)
12BH7
TWIN TRIODE
www.op316.com/tubes/mw/image/12bh7age.pdf

With so many 12AU7 variants out there (only the 12AX7 has more variants)
Here are some very good references on the types of 12AU7 tubes available:
They include:
12AU7
12AU7A
5814 (If you can find the CBS Hytron 5818, do try them!!!)
5963
6189
ECC82
ECC802
There are others, too - and that's not even counting the variance among brands.
Even then, there are "triple-mica's," different style getters, 5 Stars, JAN's, and many other brands.
I must have about 2 dozen different 12AU7-type tubes, and only 2-3 are actually 12AU7's
These tubes all have different flavors and the bottom line is to use whatever sounds good to you no matter what the opinions of others

Available 12BH7 Black Long Plate Tubes:
-G.E.
-Sylvania
-RCA

Here's a brief list of some audio useful loctals, and their octal equivalent:

7A4 - loctal 6J5 (1/2 of a 6SN7GT)

7AF7 - mu of 16.5, very similar otherwise to a 6SN7 or 6CG7/6FQ7

7B5 - loctal 6K6

7C5 - loctal 6V6GT

7C7 - loctal 6SJ7 (or really close to it!)

7F7 - loctal 6SL7

7F8 - no equivalent, mu of 48, rp of 3300, twin VHF triode, used by jc morrison in his "Siren Song" preamp
as written up in Sound Practices.

7N7 - loctal 6SN7GT

7Z4 - fullwave indirectly heated rectifier, a bit more current capability (100ma./plate) than a 6V4/EZ80. Probably
make a nice preamp rectifier!

All the tubes above use 6.3 volts on the heaters!

Another possibility is the 14XXX series of loctals. Almost all the tubes above are available in 12.6 volt versions. There
is no 14B5 or 14Z4 though.
By using a 7F7 voltage amp, a 7N7 or 7AF7 phase splitter, and a pair of 7C5s as outputs, you can make a nice
push-pull all loctal amplifier! You can use a 7Z4 rectifiers if you don't go SS!

I have many of these tubes in stock, drop me a note if you are interested!

12AX7 Vacuum Tube Reference Information:
ECC83: This European nomenclature for 12AX7.
ECC803/ECC803S/E83CC: This "premium" version of European made 12AX7. The "S" on the ECC803S indicates "select" and are usually gold pin.
These are usually found on Telefunken and Siemens branded tubes and a very rare Radio tron ecc803S version from the Philips factory in Australia.
12ax7: Original version of the 12ax7.
Early production was manufactured in the USA by Tung Sol, RCA, Sylvania, GE etc. The earliest 12ax7 have larger 17mm plates.
The 12ax7 version without an "A" suffix is to be used only in parallel filament circuits, so do not use these in a “series” circuit. This is an unusual problem to run into as they are normally found in TV sets.
The best way to tell if your circuit is a series circuit is by examining all of the tubes and looking at the voltages (voltages other than 6 and 12 volts). If all tubes in your circuit start with 6 or 12 (except for 5 Volt rectifiers) , then it is a parallel.
12ax7a: Can be used in series or parallel circuits.
Many manufacturers marked 12AX7's as 12ax7 without the “A” suffix well into the 60's and 70's,
but these are most often 12AX7A's marked as 12AX7.
12AD7: Non-microphonic/low hum version of the 12AX7 made by Sylvania and NEC in Japan.
Great for audio applications that uses a 12AX7.
12DT7, 12DM7, 12DF7: special quality low noise/low microphonic versions of the 12AX7.
Usually branded as Westinghouse or Raytheon.
7025: Hifi low noise version of the 12AX7 with all other specifications being the same as 12AX7.
Tubes marked with both 12AX7 and 7025 are usually low noise as well.
5751: Military version/drop in replacement for the 12AX7, but is actually different.
The 5751 has identical plate resistance to the 12AX7, but the gain is 70 compared to 100 for the 12AX7.
Early production 5751 have extra thick mica spacers (often three know as triple mica) and extra support rods to minimize microphonic response. Many 5751 also have matched triode units.
7729: CBS made industrial version of the 12AX7 with gold pins for special applications requiring reliability and low noise/low microphonics.
6681: The mobile version of a 12AX7. Usually these are the same as a regular 12ax7 which have been tested and screened to perform well in circuits with large variations in filament voltage.
7058: Same as a 12AX7 but with a 13.5 volt non-tapped filament.
Can be used in circuits which do not utilize the 6.3V filament tap. Performance is same as regular 12ax7.
