Seems the word is finally out that a great reel to reel deck will outperform the best turntable.
Tandberg 20A SE 4 track (3 3/4 - 7 1/2 ips) in great working order.
This machine has been fully upgraded with new belts and Capacitors replaced with Nichicon Audio Caps in the power supply and Elna silmic II for the audio board playback secction.
Don't know about cap upgrades?
I borrowed this from a fellow tech who explains...
You will be surprised how good these old players can sound with better parts and a good tape. I use the word upgraded because even if new the caps I use are usually much better than the new ones used when making this player. I use Nichicon Muse, Elna, Blackgate, Panasonic FC and only top film caps too! This makes a HUGE difference in the sound making the music smoother and have more dynamics and bass usually. It will also lower the noise floor especially when most of the caps are dried out. A few say they cannot hear the difference online but I think they do not like hearing that upgrading 68 caps on this one and others cost money. Sadly many do not want to pay what it costs to upgrade and bring these pieces back to better than new life causing many good techs to find other work. They say it does not need to be upgraded and that is like saying there is no need to change the oil in your car. I wonder how many on here set or have their bias and dc offset at least once a year? That is why we have lost so many wonderful old pieces and will soon start losing more of the newer ones. It is not hard to test and set on most amps so please take time to learn how and save your piece of history. Yes, they can be fixed but that can cost a good bit when all it takes it a little time.
In the case of this Tandberg over 50 Caps were replaced and it took 10 hours to fully service this machine.
Also, an improved power input with IEC power socket
Cosmetic condition 9/10 Sound 10/10 Heres another capacitor reference... http://tech.juaneda.com/en/articles/electrolyticcapacitors.html
Playback sound is as good as you can get, so if you have a fancy souped up Technics with an outboard head amp and Tape project tapes- Try This 20A and look out- it will be a very close contest, some preferring this deck- fact! I have been using these machines since the early 80s and still have my original that has never had a problem. Some people report problems with the power switch, speed selector switches and reel tables on these machines and this one is fine. Recording enthusiasts should anticipate getting this eq & biased for their preferred tape as this machine deserves it. Admittedly, I don't do much recording as I have a 1000+ collection of commercially recorded reel tapes.
I have owned all of the top models of Sony, Pioneer, Technics, Teac and Crown and can say with certainty- If you have a great sound system, these Tandbergs with cap upgrades way outperform their Japanese counterparts. The margin of difference is similar to comparing a great cassette player to a great Japanese reel to reel- Its huge! And the next step up Tandberg or Crown. Far more dynamic, rich and musical. This machine will way outperform a Pioneer RT 909, Akai 747, Teac X2000 or Sony 880-2 and that says alot. Happy to prove this statement here in Toronto- just bring over your best machine for a showdown!
All functions tested.
$1750 Can = approx $1400 US and for a machine like this- that's a great price!
