Up for sale are a pair of John Tucker's eXemplar Horn speakers. If you don’t know the history, here is the original article from Sound Practices issue #9. http://home.earthlink.net/~jmarkwart/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/spexemplar.pdf
These are extremely rare. I doubt there are even 2 dozen pairs of these in existence. I think I have seen 3 pairs for sale online in about 15 years. They're 103db efficient and you can play them louder than is reasonable for listening without hearing loss using 3.5wpc 2a3 SET amps. I never thought I'd sell these speakers. They are some of the best speakers I've heard...
What is included: 2 Exemplar bass horns with Altec Lansing 515-8Gs, 2 Exemplar mid/high horns with Altec Lansing 909-8As. Specs: 103 db/1w/1m. Crossover at 750hz. Bandwith of 135Hz - 22kHz below which bass reflex loading extends response to 37Hz. Tractrix horns. The crossover is the latest design from John Tucker. Black finish with orange horn flares (easy to switch back to black – I will do on request)
Dimensions: Bass/mids horn size/weight: 26.75" W, 33" H, 25" D - about 190 pounds
Highs horn size/weight: 22" W, 14.5" H, 18" D - about 60 pounds
My story, I first heard the eXemplar horns at the VSAC show 1998 in Seattle area. I remember sitting down and hearing a Tracy Chapman song and being blown away. I knew in that session that I had to have these horns, some way or another. I ended up with a pair in black in 1998, and have loved them since. They have moved with me from an apartment, to a starter house, then across the country, and back across the country. I have had them about 20 years. Along the way in San Francisco I painted the tractrix horn flares orange to go with the theme in my living room. I put window screen in the bass bin in front of the 515’s after my kids were born in order to protect the drivers from toys and curiosity. Other speakers have briefly come and gone, but the eXemplars always came back in quickly. I can take the orange back to black. If you prefer the orange, I can leave them as-is.
The sound: They're exceptionally revealing. Every tiny nuance upstream gets its own spotlight. They are also quite versatile. I’m a fan of a wide range of music and in all cases I have been thrilled. They do everything from Rock, Punk, and Metal to old school Country to Jazz to Classical.
I'm only selling because I got a pair of JBL Hartsfield repros. I can’t have two giant pairs of horns in the house. To use car terms, it’s like switching from a Porsche 911 Turbo to a GT3. Both are great, but each have advantages in certain areas.
I have the original cardboard boxes, which are probably good for one last move. Ideally these could be picked up, or I could meet someone within a few hours of Cleveland, Ohio to exchange. I can ship at buyer’s expense. I had good luck with the Hartsfields using YRC’s LTL freight service. Idea is I could put the horns on pallets, in the boxes, then strap the boxes down and wrap with thick foam panels and shipping wrap.
Will consider a trade deal including a DEQX setup (pre/processor unit & mic).
Audition is welcome at my home in Ohio. Contact me to set this up.
An excerpt of a review of somebody who heard these at VSAC 2008: "Sound of the Show Best in Class at VSAC Exemplar John Tucker of Exemplar audio has an amazing ear and a gift for producing sound that is coherent and absolutely musical. At the show he was running a computer source to his older exemplar dac to his stunning pre amp>330b amps and finally to his Exemplar horns. If I had the room for these and the budget they would be mine no question best speakers I have EVER heard. Altec horns on top and two bass units one is a sub powered by a solid state amp. These moved so much air that I felt like the guy in that old Maxell commercial. I could not stop grinning the entire time music was played." http://www.head-fi.org/t/328599/vsac-2008-vancouver-wa-portland-meet/30 Note: Sub in picture not included.
