March 13- SOLD - Trade deal...expect when dust clears will work out to about $300-350 for this amp.
Note - Still have 2 x Hafler 220s - make nice set of monoblocs
Well regarded Hafler DH-220 power amp, with Musical Concepts upgrades.
Also has rack handles and heavy power cord upgrades.
Plays and sounds very good.
I haven't owned this amp for long, but have played it a few hours and it didn't miss a beat. I turned volume up high with CD player on pause, to check for buzz or hum. Dead quiet.
115 watts per channel into 8 ohms.
These are underrated amps that are tough and sound very good. Compare favorably to other brands costing double or triple.
I believe this is a factory assembled amp, as opposed to a kit amp. Kit amps are good, but realistically there's more chance of bad soldering or other errors on a kit built amp. So a factory assembled amp is a plus. I read that if there's an "A" in the serial number, then its; factory. This one has the "A" - plus someone has initialed the serial number label - I assume the factory builder?
At one time you could buy a factory bridging kit - a little switch to allow mono or bridged, and some wiring. Probably have to make your own now. At least the info for the original one is available.
Bridged I believe these are rated at 240 watts - maybe more.- think I read 300 somewhere? A side, clyde.
The Musical Concepts upgrades include a bunch of caps on the boards, plus much larger 26,000 mfd power capacitors - big blue ones. Plus a new higher quality power transformer - the large round unit here in photos.
The Mconcepts company is still out there, and still offers ugrades to this and other Haflers.
I think the value of the current upgrade in kit form is $600 Us, plus shipping both ways. Call it $1000 Canadian. I think it includes the transformer? If not - that's amother $200 US,
The upgrade is an older one - looks like a date of 1990 on the transformer.
Probably an owner installed upgrade - that's what the people at musical concepts think. I sent them photos to verify it was their upgrade.
My price reflects the age of the upgrade.
Defects? Not sure if this is normal - the red backlight for the power switch flickers pretty much constantly.
Ive had a 200 or 220 in the past. ..With a hafler preamp. I thought was a good to very good sounding set. Clean..quiet..and strong.
Note - I may have another pair of 220s for sale...not sure if am keeping or selling. Sound good, look quite good, factory assembled as well.
Interesting trades considered.
