Respected integrated with an AMAZING large phono stage loaded with Nichicon MUSE ES capacitors and moving coil cartridge step up transformer. Other audio signal capacitors are Elna Silmic II. Pioneer Elite A-88X from 1985, dual mono architecture with individual power transformers and 7 power supplies. It is audiophile tuned from the factory and with upgraded components. 14-AWG power cord, The Pioneer Elite brand resembles nothing to the consumer Pioneer brand.
The A-88X was the top of the range Elite series integrated amplifier
Power output: 120 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)
Upgraded components and tuned for audiophile performance. When I acquired this unit years ago (not from a yard sale or thrift store), I replaced the dual amplifier control ICs with genuine new Pioneer ICs parts. That is the reason that it came into my possession. The upgrades to this unit proceeded as follows:
All the non-essential functions and wiring were removed, including tape out and tape in circuits, muting circuit, rumble filter, tape selector switches, stereo/rev/mono switch, and all glitchy selector micro switches, etc. These are included in a picture. This enabled the unit to work glitch free and the sound to be unmolested in signal quality traps.
Cabinet is near perfect but for some minor almost invisible nicks. There are no dents anywhere in the unit or odors of any kind, from smoke free home.
Very clean operation, no noisy controls or buttons that are the achilles heal of all vintage audio gear.
The selector switch is new providing 3 line level inputs and 1 phono input for either Moving Coil or Moving Magnet Cartridges.
All metal chassis and knobs.
Non slip rubber feet 1" tall for improved cooling.
Upgraded the preamp will all new Elna SILMIC II audiophile capacitors and installed new upgraded operational amps, National Semiconductor (now TI) LME audiophile line.
Only essential functions from factory retained to obtain the most unhindered sound quality: 3 line level inputs, 1 phono stage input switchable to either MC (with internal step up transformer) or MM cartridge, bass, treble, balance, relay controlled speaker switch, sealed Alps Black volume control and new sealed selector switch.
Relays were removed disassembled and cleaned of carbon buildup (Matsushita pictured).
Mostly class A operation.
Robust Japanese Toshiba output transistors
7 internal power supplies driven by three transformers.
Please notice that I removed the tape jn tape out RCA jacks (along with their wiring and glitchy switches) from the rear plate. These served no purpose in the intended improvement.
This amplifier makes my Bose 301 speakers sound like they cost thousands of dollars.
