This is an opportunity to purchase the Reference 3A Master Control monitor speakers from a long time Reference 3A owner who cares for these speakers a great deal. They were fully checked out by Tash at the Reference 3A factory this month, and are in perfect working order.
This is a great speaker that features all the classic Reference 3A strengths;
-8" hand-woven carbon fibre woofer
-no complex crossover, direct connection of woofer to amp
-92 db efficiency
-tremendous bass performance
-dense, inert cabinet construction to eliminate spurious vibration
I am only selling to rationalize my stereo system, and want these to go to a good, appreciative home. I currently own three pairs of speakers, two of which are Reference 3A's.
The Reference 3A Master Control's I'm selling were direct predecessors to the legendary Reference 3a Royal Master. These Master Control's were made in Switzerland by Innovac, just as the Royal Master was.
UHF Magazine has used the Reference 3A La Suprema as its reference speaker (the top part of the La Suprema is a Royal Master unit) for over sixteen years!
The Reference 3A Master Control is reported by multiple sources to be the studio monitor used by Cardas in their mastering studio.
The speaker cabinets are in 7/10 Audiogon condition. There are some nicks and swirl marks that I will try to show carefully once better photos are uploaded- please accept my apologies, these pictures are temporary and were uploaded from my Blackberry. With regard to the grilles, the little knobs that hold them onto the front of the speaker have broken off over time, so the grilles are held on by Velcro as can be seen in pictures. The little knobs can be replaced, I simply forgot to ask Reference 3A about them when they were serviced, but I'm quite sure they can be found online very cheaply. The Velcro worked well for me, and wasn't visually intrusive, so I left it as is.
They are finished in flat black paint, and the speakers look very good in the listening room.
The bass drivers and tweeters are in original unmodified condition. Neither the woofers nor tweeters have been modified or "upgraded" in any way shape or form; they are as they were when they emerged from the Innovac factory.
The tweeter capacitors and internal Van Den Hul wiring are all original also- these speakers were carefully voiced by designer Daniel Dehay, and I have no desire to change anything about them- they sound outstanding, a true reference level speaker; they are far superior to the pair of original 3A MM's I owned (and loved) for over eight years previous to buying the Master Controls.
The Reference 3A Master Control's were factory serviced this month. They received full testing, had one of the plastic rear terminal cups replaced, and had an upgraded epoxy added to the foam surrounds where the driver attaches. There will be no "surprises" when purchasing these units- they are in perfect operational condition.
This leads to the inevitable question- how do they compare to the modern Reference 3A MM de Capo?
The Master Control was designed to be a higher-end speaker by far, and cost much more than the de Capo when new. The Master Control's cabinets are a much more substantial the de Capo's, with enhanced, heavier sound deadened multi-laminate side panels to control spurious vibration.
The woofers and tweeters are precision matched, higher-spec units from the original Swiss production run.
These speakers deserve high a quality source and high quality amplification, and at the reasonable price point, they will be able to "grow" for many years in a system with steadily improving source components and amplification.
They follow the classic Reference 3A design, with a hand-woven 8” carbon fiber woofers directly connected to the amplifier, and a 1” fabric dome tweeter with no crossover network- the bass driver rolls off naturally and the capacitor simply rolls in the highs. They are fully phase coherent, which results in strain-free listening, incredible musicality, and a "you are there" feeling.
These speakers are 92 db efficient with 6 ohm impedance, and are very easy to drive with low powered tube amplification. I currently use an Audiomat Prelude 30 watt amplifier (15 watts in class A) and it drives these speakers with tremendous ease.
