Some of the most sought after Yamaha pieces are the silver faced class A capable integrateds, the CA-800/1000/1010 and 2010. The earlier 800 and 1000 actually have a warmer sound than the later models and many rate them higher for sound quality.

The CA-800 is rated at 50w/ch but has the option of running as a 10 w/ch class A amp. The preamp is unusually flexible. It has two phono inputs, one of which has varibale capacitive loading for the cartridge. In addition to Tuner and Aux inputs, it also has two Tape inputs with full dubbing flexibility. The tone controls have variable turnover frequencies, the loudness control is Yamaha's famous and very useful continuously variable one (omitted form the later models!) and there are two different frequencies selectable for both the high and low filters. There is a coupler switch at the back for operation as an integrated amp or seperates.

This example is in nice shape. It has some marks but is generally very clean. The speaker terminals and AC outlets are all in great shape. The coupler switch at the back still has the original plastic guard piece and screw in place. I spent several hours painstakingly taking it apart and cleaning every piece inside and out. It then had a visit to a tech for adjusting and control cleaning before reassembly. Construction quality is remarkable. Once the wood case and faceplate are off everything inside is still fully encased in metal boxes. The bottom of the wood case has flush mount metal grilles held in place by screws to cover the ventilation holes.

Sonically this is a very seductive amp. Even in A/B mode it is quite warm and full but in Class A it gains in body and solidity. Surprisingly good at communicating musical subtleties and details.

Tuner time. Yamahas legendary analog tuners are the CT-7000 and T-2 and both still command very nice prices. Below them are the superb and pretty much equal CT-800 and CT-1010. The CT-600 is extremely similar to the 800. It uses the same tuning head but instead of having seperate boards for the AM and FM sections, everything is on one board. It is a very sweet sounding tuner, far, far better than the greatly downgraded 3 gang 610 that followed (though even it managed to sound very nice despite being a pretty empty box).

This example is also in nice shape, though the lamps need changing. The AM antenna is in great shape as are all the jacks. Reception is clean and it sounds beautiful.

This pair will provide a sound quality that cannot be touched by any receiver without spending huge amounts more. The construction quality and feel are much better than most companies even attempted later on. It's also really fun to have a Class A amp to play with. Not a lot of good alternatives out there. The big Classé and Levinsons are still big money and the more affordable Musical Fidelity and Marantz 1/4 A series suffer from terminal heat related problems, something that is not an issue for this properly heat sinked and well laid out design.

Local pick up would be preferred. Please let me know if you have any questions!
