Price dropped - now final.
And no, you cannot find a SX-980 in this condition cheaper - Think - Just how much restoration costs? Actually it's a steal at the listed price.
You may continue to listen to muddy sound of your garage sale find, or you can experience the glory of this fine Pioneer gem the way it's supposed to be - like brand new performance.
THIS IS FOR AUDIOPHILE OR VINTAGE AUDIO COLLECTOR WHO WANTS THE VERY BEST.
LESS THAN 1% OF ALL VINTAGE PIONEERS ARE IN THIS CONDITION.
From my own Pioneer collection.
One of the most sought-after vintage receivers, designed with music in mind.
THE BIG BOY - 22 x 7 x 18 inches
MAGNIFICENT PLAYBACK WITH ANY SOURCE; YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE IN CONCERT HALL
Complete with two original boxes (good condition, normal tear and wear), original owner's manual, original schematics, original styrofoam inserts.
This Pioneer looks and sounds like brand new.
Works perfectly. All the knobs and switches are original.
Has original blue&black NEC transistors, with a truly prodigious output.
All circuit boards are completely original as well, no repairs ever done - GUARANTEED.
Rated at 80 WPC RMS, however went all the way to 97 WPC before clipping when bench-tested - this speaks for itself. Both THD and IMD are below 0.05% even at full power.
Fully serviced by me, including De-Oxit treatment, adjusting DC offset and bias, replacing the lamps, re-soldering grey solder joints.
MAIN FILTER CAPS WERE REPLACED WITH BRAND NEW NIPPON CHEMICON (NICHICON) AUDIO GRADE CAPS, POWER SUPPLY BOARD WAS ALSO RECAPPED USING AUDIO GRADE CAPACITORS.
That's $80 for parts plus 4 hours of labor - consider doing this at any repair shop and you will see just how much this Pioneer is really worth.
Finding another SX-980 like this one is nearly an impossible task.
Why those caps were replaced and the rest were left alone?
Because recapping power amp and especially preamp WILL change the original sound, and as an audiophile I do not want to do that. Main filter cans and power supply capacitors are the most stressed parts in any amplifier, and must be replaced as a part of preventative maintenance, to assure long term reliability.
Regarding the build quality:
- A team of 21 professional audio engineers worked to design this model;
there was a very good reason why a specific diode pack or transistor was used in place of another;
Pioneer hired the best at the time, and the music was always put before marketing, until 1981.
- DC (direct-coupled) design
- 3 levels of built-in protection; your speakers are always safe
- 42 lb net weight; 48 lbs with package
- North America version - 110 V
- Huge heavy-duty transformer, paired with 75V/18000mF caps
- Highest-quality components throughout
- 5 - 100000 Hz frequency response
- Can be used as separate preamp or power amp
- The only thing built better is vintage Marantz, and a few of vintage Sansui models
